Porcelain Veneers

When you see someone with a dazzling smile, you may not realize that they owe their smile to veneers. A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is applied to the tooth surface to change the size, shape, and color of your teeth. When we suggest veneers, we often get a variety of questions about them. You can read some of them below.

Why are veneers made of porcelain?

While veneers can be made out of advanced composite resins, we’ve found that nothing compares to porcelain. It’s extremely durable and long-lasting. Porcelain can even mimic the natural glimmer of teeth while being stain-resistant. In fact, a porcelain veneer will not discolor during its lifetime. Most importantly, porcelain veneers are comfortable because they don’t irritate the gums.

How long will porcelain veneers last?

When you practice good oral hygiene and schedule regular check-ups, you can expect a porcelain veneer to last for many years. Our practice stands behind all veneers for one year when you have good oral hygiene and visit our practice for regular check-ups.

Does applying a porcelain veneer hurt?

No. Most patients compare the discomfort of applying veneers to that of a regular dental cleaning.

How do veneers differ from crowns?

Veneers and crowns are two very different procedures. With porcelain veneers, a healthy tooth is covered with a very thin, yet extremely strong veneer. The purpose is to improve the appearance of the tooth. Crowns, on the other hand, are placed over weakened teeth to strengthen and restore them. While some crowns are used to enhance the appearance of misshapen teeth, our dentists are more likely to recommend veneers to improve the appearance of healthy teeth.

Is there an age limit for porcelain veneers?

No. Any adult with healthy teeth can benefit from this procedure.
